Ted grew up working hard and fishing. As a young man, he traveled to Chicago where his sister lived and worked in a factory welding railroad car. Their oldest son was born there on August 21, 1975, before the three of them moved to Watonga, OK later that year. Ted worked as a welder and in 1978 his youngest son was born. Later, Ted went to work for the City of Watonga – Street Department where he retired from in 2003. He continued to work for people in town doing landscaping work and taught Spanish at the Chisholm Trail Technology Center.
