Margie Helen Hursh

Margie Helen Hursh was born on August 27, 1932, at Lone Wolf, Oklahoma to Daniel and Velma Edith (Mitchell) Threlkeld. Margie passed away on January 12, 2024, at Brookdale Assisted Living in Weatherford, Ok at the age of 91. She graduated from Watonga High School in 1950. She attended SWOSU on a typing scholarship for a semester. She married Donald Hursh on December 10, 1971, in Watonga, OK. She was a lifelong resident of Watonga, with brief stays in Oklahoma City, Oakwood and Geary. Margie had various jobs starting with Bell Telephone as a switchboard operator, then always in the service of others, she worked at the Watonga Clinic, Watonga Hospital in Medical Records, GED program,  Literacy Program, Hursh Farms as the “Head Honcho”, the T.B. Ferguson Museum curator, Wheatheart Nutrition and volunteered for many projects. She was recognized by NODA for her time and dedication to residents living in Oklahoma’s Long Term Care Facilities. She received recognition as an Outstanding Outreach Individual for Minority Aging and many other awards. One of her favorite jobs was writing a weekly Wheatheart news column for the Watonga Republican and signed it with her pen name of Helen.

Margie enjoyed bowling in a league and has trophies to prove it! She loved growing tomatoes, collecting hats, props/costumes for the theater, reading mysteries and Louis L’Amour. Margie was the ultimate OU football fan and could be found every Saturday with the radio/tv at full volume. She was a founding member of WCT and permanent board member for 31 + years and was awarded a plaque inscribed with  Valuable Ambassador, Audience Favorite, Our “Go-To” Girl.

 

Margie loved it when her family came to visit, most especially the grandkids. She loved putting out a “million” eggs in her front yard with prizes in them for the grandkids to find.

It was her tradition that any new member had to have his/her picture taken wearing one of her many hats!  She had a rare ability to make everyone she encountered feel valued and at ease.

 

Margie is survived by her children, Melissa Sanders and husband Tom of Brunswick, GA, Nancy Crawford and husband Travis of Puxico, MO, her grandchildren Aubrey Maricle(Alan) Tulsa, OK, Jill Roberts, Andover, KS, Monica Sanders, Brunswick, GA, Trevor Sanders (Michelle), Augusta, KS, Jeremy Helm (Paola) Tampa, FL, Kayla Tilmon (Nathan), Sikeston, MO, Michael Acord (Vanessa), Malvern, AR

her great grandchildren, Nadia, Sebastien, Amalys, Zane, Morgan, Raiden, Carter, Hudson, Ledger, Logan, McKinley, Turner, Hunter, Ethan, Lucas, Rylee, Braedon, Kaelob, Talon, Maeson, Jaecelyn and Raelin as well as many other relatives and friends.

 

Margie was preceded in death by her parents, Dan and Velma Threlkeld, her husband Don Hursh, her daughter, Linda Acord, son-in-law, Ronnie Payne, her sister Crystal, and her 6 brothers, William, Alvin, Melvin, Marvin, Noah, and Gene Threlkeld.

 

Funeral services for Margie will be held Friday, January 19, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at the Watonga Christian Church, with Pastor Adam Lovitt officiating. The burial will follow at I.O.O.F. Cemetery, with Wilkinson Mortuary in charge of arrangements.
